The Building

David Adjaye’s vision preserves the West Heating Plant building’s Art Moderne character while transforming the industrial structure into a livable celebration of the past. He creates a state of the art building with 60-70 condominium residences.

Taking inspiration from W.M. Dewey Foster’s simplified Art Moderne design for the West Heating Plant, David Adjaye has preserved what is most noble and architecturally significant about the original design and enhanced it with new 21st Century sensibility.

The monumental 29th Street façade of the West Heating Plant will be carefully restored along with the river stone-clad base of the building; the remainder of the building will be rebuilt using 21st Century materials that accurately replicate the massing, materiality and verticality of the existing structure.

The windows on the north and south façade replicate the height and width of the plant’s existing windows. Additionally, balancing respect for the existing proportions and materiality with daring innovation, Adjaye has introduced operable shutters. Operated by occupancy sensors, the shutters will utilize state of the art materials to replicate the color and texture of the building’s masonry.
