The Building

David Adjaye’s revised concept design for the redevelopment of the West Heating Plant is an exciting and bold new design that is inspired by the existing plant’s steel structure and its industrial machinery. Adjaye’s design seeks to make a clear distinction between the preserved elements and new construction.

Adjaye’s scheme reveals and appreciates these histories through a choreography of operable shutters and braced frames to create an innovative metal screen system utilizing 21st Century technologies. The new building’s penthouse, north façade, and south façade will feature operable shutters, creating a dynamic blend between opacity and transparency. The metal façade’s detailing references the steam heat plant’s mechanized components and evokes the memory of the plant’s steel framing system. The east elevation features a predominantly glass façade overlooking Rock Creek. As before, the scheme preserves the majority of the 29th Street NW façade. The concept design elegantly blends the 29th Street façade with a striking new architecture.
